Van life – our first 2 months on the road
October 3, 2016 by Louise in van life

We’ve been living full-time on the road for 2 months now and thought it about time to share a little on how it’s been so far. Some context: we’re two twenty-somethings who’ve lived in spacious places all our lives, with separate bedrooms, bathrooms, kitchens and living rooms – in short, accustomed to lots of space. We’re now two people sharing 5m2, with cooking / bathroom / kitchen / living areas all combined.

How is the transition? Possible, if you want it to be. But be prepared for it to be a steep learning curve that requires patience, mutual respect and a sense of humour. Needless to say to have to like each others’ company since you’ll be spending more time than ever before together. But it’s bonding and as some friends say, the “ultimate test”…

Yes, it’s a small space. Yes, sometimes it can get cramped and messy and you can get on top of each other. But that is easily overcome by making the most of all the space you have outside, and reminding yourselves of why you’re on this journey. Go for walks if you need head space, do yoga outside, cook outside whenever possible, continue pursuing your individual interests whilst sharing that space. Give and take. Talk about anything and everything. Be silly and laugh many times a day until your tummy hurts, even if you have run out of water or have been locked inside the van all day in an attempt to escape the dreaded midgies. Or if the entire sole of your walking boot detaches mid-coastal walk and you’ve smelly bog feet for days…

Some days we’ve dreamt of a hot shower and clean freshly washed clothes (doing laundry regularly is underrated!) But most days we’ve relished being so much outside, waking up with a beach / mountain view and being able to explore new places every day. Our first two months have been a whirlwind adventure and we’ve learnt more than we imagined we would. We can’t wait for more.

That is still such a crazy awesome adventure and I hope you guys are experiencing everything you’d hoped for and so much more! Your map is starting to fill up nicely with the numerous dots and I look forward to seeing how it continues to cover more ground. Keep the stories coming! 🙂
