If you’re driving from Northern Greece into Albania, it’s definitely worth driving through the Zagorohoria region and into the Vikos Gorge – a place so very different from Southern Greece and the islands you question whether you’re still in Greece. It’s a place graced with mountains every direction you look and deep forest-clad gorges, the most dramatic of which is Vikos Gorge. Sheer limestone walls tower 900m into the sky and there’s a 12km trek that runs through the gorge. Charming little grey-slate villages lie sprinkled on the hillside and on the valley floor you’ll find a lovely river perfect to swim in.
